Ben Franklin's Business Advice

Linda Anger By Linda Angér
We want to welcome our new Contributing Expert, Linda Anger to the Smart Women's Café.  Linda is an accomplished copywriter/designer and owner of The Write Concept, Inc .  You can learn more about Linda by visiting the Directory of Contributing Experts on our website www.smartwomenscafe.com

Before he became the most famous founding father of the United States, Ben Franklin was a businessman.  His career began at age 12, when he became an apprentice typesetter.  Franklin founded his own printing business at age 22, became the official printer for Pennsylvania at age 24, and was so successful that he retired at age 44.

Some call him the founding father of American business - and his 12 rules of management make it clear where modern business gurus have gained their inspiration:
  1. Finish better than your beginnings
  2. All education is self-education
  3. Seek first to manage yourself, then to manage others
  4. Influence is more important than victory
  5. Work hard and watch your costs
  6. Everybody wants to appear reasonable
  7. Create your own set of values to guide your actions
  8. Incentive is everything
  9. Create solutions for seemingly impossible problems
  10. Become a revolutionary for experimentation and change
  11. Sometimes it is better to do 1,001 small things right than one large thing right
  12. Deliberately cultivate you reputation and legacy

As we approach another school year, I ask myself:  how educated and successful would each of us become if we committed to putting Franklin's twelve rules into daily action?  Could we change the course of history as he did?  Could we at least change the course of our individual lives?

In his "retirement" Franklin founded:

  • The first subscription library in the colonies
  • The first fire department in Philadelphia
  • The American Philosophical Society, a school that became the University of Pennsylvania
  • The first insurance company
  • And the first hospital in Philadelphia.

Franklin eventually became a statesman, joining the other famous men who stood as revolutionaries against the established and (at the time) legal government, initiating the declarations and actions that lead to America's war of independence.  He was the only founding father to sign the three most important documents in America's young history:  The Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Paris, and the Constitution.  And yet, despite his amazing influence and contributions to the American cause, Congress in 1788 denied him compensation for his service to the government.

Perhaps we can't all have the influence and national potency of a Benjamin Franklin.  But we can learn from his example, practice his twelve rules of management in our business and our personal lives, and change our corner of the world.

I'm starting at number eleven.  How about you?

Letters from Africa with Peggi Tabor
 meditateLetter #23

Dear Family and Friends,

So much has happened here since I last wrote to you.  Nothing earth shattering and so I've just been pouring it into my journal-which is now pushing 300 pages.  But I love keeping in touch and sharing a bit about life as a PCV in Africa.  It's been another period of good news and bad news events.

On the positive side we have little Motlatsi back.  He is the beautiful baby boy I had the privilege of helping into this world my first night on the job here in the village.  I think I told you about the lobola issue.  Tjeeka, Motlatsi's father and the son of the family with whom I live, "stole" his wife.  That is he took her from her home and kept her away in hiding for several days.  According to tribal custom they were then legally married but there was still the question of the lobola or bride price to be paid.

Malineo, now known as Mamotlatsi (mother of Motlatsi), is a beautiful, gentle, obedient girl from a good family in a neighboring village -her Dad figured she was worth a lot.  The lobola negotiations did not go well.  Then she had a son.  This increased her bride price considerably.  As soon as little Motlatsi was deemed old enough to travel - three months by tribal custom, her family came en mass and took mother and child away.  There were absolutely no visiting rights.  Nena, the father of this family, has been sending every dime he can home from his job in the South African mines for the past year to buy back his daughter-in-law and grandson. Last month we were finally able to get them back.  I chipped in two cows.
